The Axis Participates In Disaster Relief
In the wake of Hurricane Ike, a massive relief effort was launched by FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers to take care of those left homeless by the storm. I had the opportunity to assist in this effort, so I did. I had just delivered a load at Wal Mart in McClenny Florida. The mission was to get a load of meals in St. Petersburg Fl and take them to the Astrodome in Houston Tx. After the hit FEMA took following their efforts after Katrina, I decided to post my trip on my blog here to show exactly how much work goes into getting supplies to the victims.
The Trip:
I left McClenny and headed down to Waldo Florida where I had to take my ten hour break. I got up and headed out for St. Petersburg at 10:30 Thursday morning. I had to stop along the way in Wildwood to get some fuel and get my Qualcomm Sattelite Communications Device activated with FEMA. Once this was accomplished, I headed down to St. Petersburg to get the load. I arrived in St Pete at about 3:30 pm.
At around 5 pm I was loaded and rolling out for Texas. After a quick stop in Wildwood Florida for a meal and to change a headlight that had burnt out, I was back on the road. At 11:30 at night, I was in Marianna Florida and had to take my ten hour break.
At 9:30 Friday morning, I was up and back on the road. I had to stop in Biloxi Mississippi for a shower and some fuel. I got right back on the road to Texas. One more stop for supplies so I would have something to eat when I got to Houston, and I arrived at the Astrodome Friday night at 11:30.
Here in Houston, the size and scope of the relief effort can really be seen. Now, understand this is just one of several locations where these efforts are taking place, but take a look at how many trucks are waiting to deliver their supplies.
When you take a look at how many trucks are involved in this relief effort, I hope it gives you a picture of the size and logistics of the effort that FEMA puts into this relief work. I want to thank FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers for the great work they do to take care of these storm victims.
