Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann
When Chris Matthews interviewed Michele Bachmann, he didn’t get that warm and fuzzy feeling crawling up his leg. What he did do is play his attack dog role and rally the liberal troops to try to take down her campaign. With help from leftist icons like the Huffington Post, the Democrat ground game set out to ensure her defeat with lies and spin. They formed groups like “Censure Bachmann” that asked for her to be punished for exercising her free speech. So, what had these leftists so worked up? When you’re over the target, you’re bound to get a lot of flak. Introducing Michele Bachmann.
Michele Bachmann is the first Conservative profiled in this new series, and for good reason. It’s the issues, people. And Michele is a strong Conservative. In the Minnesota Senate, Michele fought to free her State from the “No Child Left Behind Act”, standing up to her own party and George Bush on an issue where he was wrong. While in the same post, she wrote the state’s “Taxpayer Bill of Rights”. She is limited government and lower taxes all the way.
In Congress she is pushing to repeal both the Death Tax and the alternative minimum tax. On energy she is the whole package. Drill offshore, ANWR, oil shale, nuclear, and alternative. On homeland security she supports not just the war on terror, but also securing our border and strengthening immigration laws. But her stance on the health care issue is what shows that she really gets it.
If you currently receive health care as a benefit from your employer, then you are not taxed for this expense. So why should you be if you are not offered this benefit, or choose to opt out for a different plan? Furthermore, you are on the money the insurance companies pay for the services you receive. On top of this, they write off the expense as a cost of doing business. So why should you have to pay tax on the money that you earned that goes to your share of the expense? Michele says you shouldn’t, and she’s right. She wants to make all of your money that goes to health insurance and health care tax deductible.
Now, all this having been said… what about the McCarthyism? For those who are unaware, I reference an article defining McCarthyism.
On 9th February, 1950, Joseph McCarthy, a senator from Wisconsin, made a speech claiming to have a list of 205 people in the State Department that were known to be members of the American Communist Party (late he reduced this figure to 57). The list of names was not a secret and had been in fact published by the Secretary of State in 1946. These people had been identified during a preliminary screening of 3,000 federal employees. Some had been communists but others had been fascists, alcoholics and sexual deviants. If screened, McCarthy’s own drink problems and sexual preferences would have resulted in him being put on the list.
McCarthy also began receiving information from his friend, J. Edgar Hoover, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). William Sullivan, one of Hoover’s agents, later admitted that: “We were the ones who made the McCarthy hearings possible. We fed McCarthy all the material he was using.”
With the war going badly in Korea and communist advances in Eastern Europe and in China, the American public were genuinely frightened about the possibilities of internal subversion. McCarthy, was made chairman of the Government Committee on Operations of the Senate, and this gave him the opportunity to investigate the possibility of communist subversion.
For the next two years McCarthy’s committee investigated various government departments and questioned a large number of people about their political past. Some lost their jobs after they admitted they had been members of the Communist Party. McCarthy made it clear to the witnesses that the only way of showing that they had abandoned their left-wing views was by naming other members of the party.
This witch-hunt and anti-communist hysteria became known as McCarthyism. Some left-wing artists and intellectuals were unwilling to live in this type of society and people such as Joseph Losey, Richard Wright, Ollie Harrington, James Baldwin, Herbert Biberman, Lester Cole and Chester Himes went to live and work in Europe.
So, what did Michele Bachmann do? Did she use her authorities or powers to investigate people for anti-American activities? Not exactly. Did she threaten to investigate people and have them imprisoned for their beliefs? Well, no. Then certainly she asked for a government panel to be formed to investigate ordinary Americans for their political affiliations, right? Wrong again. So what, pray tell, did she do?
She committed the offense of all offenses. She asked the media to do their job. I quote.
“What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think people would love to see an expose like that.”
How dare she? She was also accused of calling Obama anti-American, which she did not. See above linked article for more details on that.
The bottom line is, these attacks on Michele Bachmann were based on the inability of the left to beat her on the issues. Why? Because Michele, unlike John McCain, is a true Conservative who was running on a Conservative platform. Hence, despite massive efforts and money dumped into her district to support her opponant, Michele Bachmann will once again represent the 6th Congressional District of Minnesota in the United States Congress. The Axis of Stevil congratulates Michele Bachmann on her win, and we sincerely hope to see more of her in the future.
