You Brought Them With You, Mr. President
Being as I was in Maryland on inauguration day, I was asked by a friend if I would be attending the ceremonies. My answer was that I wouldn’t be caught dead there. The reason for this is, like the President or not, the inauguration is a solemn and reverent occasion that should be treated with an air of respect and dignity, and I would have been unable to bring that attitude with me. Unfortunately, not all who attended the inauguration seemed to grasp this concept. Yet it was not members of the Nobama movement, nor Bush supporters who tarnished the occasion.
Notice the screen on the left hand side. Not only did the Obama supporters turn this honorable occasion into something not unlike a high school pep rally, they seem to be quite proud of themselves. One might notice the large grins, cheers, and laughter from these particular specimens, proving once and for all that ignorance is indeed bliss.
While I initially felt bad for Obama, my feelings changed after giving the whole scenario some thought. You see, two years ago many Obama supporters were totally uninvolved in politics. Not to be bothered with anything that required the use of multiple brain cells operating simultaneously, they were perfectly happy in their semi comatose state of political hibernation. Then, along came a man who asked these mental midgets not to become politically aware, but rather to simply try to remember the name of a candidate long enough to pull a lever. He knew that any word greater than two syllables was likely to cause such a mental log jam in what can best be described as the evolutionary beginnings of something remotely resembling a thought process in the single celled minds of these people. Thus, he kept it simple and thought better than to risk more than two words on this crowd. So hope and change became a campaign slogan.
The problem is, you can’t wake this crowd up and expect them to go right back to sleep. Hence, a few of them were able to stay focused long enough to glance away from the gps long enough to keep from crashing into their fellow idiots who were making the trek to Washington D.C. alongside them, undoubtedly headed northbound in the southbound lanes of I95. Fortunately, the other vehicles were piloted by the intelligent who were retreating from the city, perfectly willing to surrender for a few days to the army of idiots advancing on their city, and they were able to avoid a pileup.
Now perhaps it is wrong of me to be so harsh on these people, but I do have my reasons. Had President Bush just fouled out of an NBA game, this type of behavior would be perfectly acceptable. Oh sure, some would mutter “that’s not very nice”, but by and large the whole incident would go unnoticed. But it wasn’t. This was an event to be watched around the world as a ceremony to mark and honor the peaceful and lawful transfer of power from one administration to the next. The mission for Obama supporter was quite simple. Refrain from making a public ass of yourself for a couple of hours, then celebrate as you see fit. They failed.
While there have been many inaugurations preceding this one, and I am optimistic that many more will follow, there is something rather exclusive about a “first”. For those of you who are Obama supporters, I will explain further. You only get one “first”. For the first time in the history of this great nation, a black American was inaugurated and became President. Recorded for all of our posterity is the reverent occasion that marked this transition of power… accompanied by the irreverent idiots who ruined it for the man they supported.
You see, Obama supporter, something could be gained by occasionaly tuning in to what the rest of us call “the news”. It is here that you would have regularly seen Bush interacting with the public. Had you done this, you may have noticed that Bush is often publicly jeered (made fun of, for you Obama supporters) and he just smiles and waves at the crowd that is insulting him. You might have even seen him dodge a pair of shoes without missing a beat. At some point, you probably would have come to one of two conclusions, which one is entirely up to you, but either would suffice. Bush is either entirely oblivious to the taunts of his detractors, or he doesn’t much care what they think of him.
Armed with this knowledge, you would have realized that booing and singing “Hey, Hey, Goodbye” would not have its desired effect on the outgoing President, and would have been forced to ask yourself what these actions would then accomplish. Perhaps I am giving you far too much credit here, but I like to think it would have led you to realize what I am about to tell you. The only thing this behavior accomplished was to tarnish the dignity that the inauguration of a new President, whomever it may be, deserves. You see, there is such a thing as respecting an office without respecting the individual holding that office. For example, you may believe the officer who pulls you over to be a complete idiot, but it is probably best to express that thought after he has released you to continue your journey down the wrong side of the Interstate. In like manner, you could have dutifully smiled and grit your teeth as President Bush walked out on to the stage. Or, you could have carried on with your business around you, failing to even recognize his presence. Either activity would be deemed at least marginally acceptable at the occasion you were attending. But if the voices of the liberal commentators at MSNBC saying “Oh, no. Please don’t” didn’t tip you off, your reaction falls into quite a different category.
All this having been said, a valuable lesson can be learned here. We do, after all, know what “they” say. And “they” are not always wrong. For example, when “they” told us to “Be careful what you wish for” they may have had this type of occasion in mind. You see, it might be nice to have a moron like Peggy Joseph thinking that if she votes for you, she won’t have to buy her own gas anymore on election day. But the blissfulness of this ignorance may just cause her to be somewhat less frugal with the gas budget, and she might show up at your inauguration.
